The Heathcote, Christchurch entrance of the Lyttelton Tunnel in July, 1962 and January, 2008.Opened in 1964, the tunnel slopes gently towards Lyttelton. Accordingly a vehicle allowed to coast the 1.9 kilometre length will arrive at the exit at the same speed at which it entered the tunnel.
